Aunty Nina Maxwell
Pukalani Hula Hale was formed in 1964 under the direction of Nina Boyd Maxwell. From her small beginnings teaching in her garage at home to having classes at Pukalani Elementary School & the Hannibal Tavares Community Center, the hālau has placed Pukalani on the map.
Her teachings come from Aunty Emma Sharpe from Lahaina, Maui.
“Our hālau has traveled throughout Hawai'i & the continental U.S. and also abroad traveling with the Maui Visitors Bureau and on cultural exchanges. We have also participated in various hula competitions around Hawai'i and on the continental U.S. Most notable ones are the Queen Lili'uokalani Keiki Hula Competition on 'O'ahu, the Merrie Monarch Festival on the Island of Hawai'i, & Hula o Nā Keiki on Maui.”
Since her passing in 2006, her daughter Hi'ilei Maxwell-Juan has carried on her legacy. Having been teaching alongside her mother since 1982.
The Maui news did a wonderful obituary for Aunty Nina back in 2006 when she passed. If you would like to read that, you can click here.
